Ouyang Ye, with the courtesy name Jingshan, was from Luling in the Northern Song Dynasty. He was a clean and upright official who was deeply loved by the people. Below is the original text of "The Biography of Ouyang Ye" and its translation.

Original Text:

Ouyang Gong's name was Ye, his courtesy name Jingshan. His ancestors lived in Luling. When he was young, he was exceptionally intelligent and could remember what he read after just one glance. At the age of twenty, he passed the imperial examination and began his career as a county magistrate. He maintained integrity and did not fear the powerful. Later, he moved to the prefectural administration and held several positions, all of which were known for his fairness. He was straightforward by nature, decisive in handling affairs, and impartial, thus being frequently promoted.

During his tenure, he often went incognito to inspect the conditions of the common people. One day, a civilian came forward with a complaint about his farmland being encroached upon by a neighbor. Ouyang Ye personally went to investigate, finding that the boundaries between the two plots of land were unclear. After much contemplation, he ordered a basin of water to be placed in the field, saying, "This water is clear and can distinguish right from wrong." He then instructed both parties to each hold one end of the water basin and pour it onto the field. The resulting water marks clearly showed the division of the fields, and everyone present was convinced.

Another year saw a severe drought, leaving the populace starving. Ouyang Ye was deeply concerned and sought ways to procure grain and other provisions to relieve the famine. However, the stored grain in the granary was insufficient to address the urgent needs of the entire region. He then used his own salary to buy food, distributing it among the poor households. Additionally, he submitted a memorial to the court requesting tax relief to alleviate the suffering of the people. The court highly praised his loyalty and diligence, approving his petition.

In his later years, Ouyang Ye returned to his hometown, building a house for reading and educating the local villagers. The townspeople were grateful for his kindness and built a shrine to honor him. He passed away during the reign of Emperor Renzong of the Song Dynasty at the age of seventy-five.

This story highlights the virtues of integrity, compassion, and wisdom that made Ouyang Ye an exemplary figure in history.
