太尉执事：辙生好为文，思之至深。以为文者气之所形，然文不可以学而能，气可以养而致。孟子曰：“我善养吾浩然之气。”今观其文章，宽厚宏博，充乎天地之间，称其气之小大。太史公行天下，周览四海名山大川，与燕赵间豪俊交游，故其文疏荡，颇有奇气。此二子者，岂尝执笔学为如此之文哉？其气充乎其中而溢乎其貌，动乎其言而见乎其文，而不自知也。

辙生十有九年矣。其居家所与游者，不过其邻里乡党之人；所见不过数百里之间，无高山大川之险阻，亦未尝见大人而问焉。独闻之于道路，未暇入城郭。居贫贱，日与农夫野老为伍，无所取资。自以为未尝得闻大道，未尝得见大贤，未尝得与大贤论道议德。是以志气微弱，文采浅薄，不足以当大任。

窃闻太尉以才略冠天下，天下之士，莫不仰望。辙虽不肖，愿得一见，以尽平生之志。伏惟太尉执事，察其愚诚，赐之教诲，使辙得以有所进益。非敢求荣，但愿得闻大道，见大贤，与之论道议德，以自勉励。若蒙垂顾，实为幸甚！

I believe that writing reflects one's inner spirit; however, writing cannot be mastered solely through learning, whereas spirit can be cultivated and enhanced.

孟子曰：“我善养吾浩然之气。”今观其文章，宽厚宏博，充乎天地之间，称其气之小大。

Mencius said, "I am good at nurturing my own noble spirit." Now looking at his writings, they are broad-minded and grand, filling the universe, matching the size of his spirit.

太史公行天下，周览四海名山大川，与燕赵间豪俊交游，故其文疏荡，颇有奇气。

The Grand Historian traveled extensively across the land, visiting famous mountains and rivers in all four seas, mingling with heroes in Yan and Zhao regions, thus his writings are free-flowing and somewhat extraordinary.

此二子者，岂尝执笔学为如此之文哉？

These two individuals, did they ever learn to write such works by simply holding a pen?

其气充乎其中而溢乎其貌，动乎其言而见乎其文，而不自知也。

Their spirit fills their hearts and overflows into their appearance, manifesting in their speech and writings without them even realizing it.

I am now nineteen years old. At home, those I associate with are merely neighbors and fellow villagers; what I have seen is limited to within hundreds of miles, there are no towering mountains or vast rivers to hinder me, nor have I ever met great men and sought advice from them.

独闻之于道路，未暇入城郭。居贫贱，日与农夫野老为伍，无所取资。

I only hear things on the road, without time to enter cities. Living in poverty, I daily keep company with farmers and rural elders, having no means to sustain myself.

自以为未尝得闻大道，未尝得见大贤，未尝得与大贤论道议德。

I consider myself not having heard any profound truths, not having seen any great sages, not having discussed doctrines and virtues with sages.

是以志气微弱，文采浅薄，不足以当大任。

Thus my ambition is weak, my literary skills shallow, insufficient to handle major responsibilities.

窃闻太尉以才略冠天下，天下之士，莫不仰望。

I secretly heard that Your Excellency is renowned for your talents and strategies, all scholars under heaven look up to you.

辙虽不肖，愿得一见，以尽平生之志。

Although I am unworthy, I wish to meet you once, to fulfill my lifelong aspirations.

伏惟太尉执事，察其愚诚，赐之教诲，使辙得以有所进益。

I humbly request that Your Excellency consider my sincere intentions and grant me guidance, so that I may make progress.

非敢求荣，但愿得闻大道，见大贤，与之论道议德，以自勉励。

Not daring to seek honor, but hoping to hear great truths, see great sages, discuss doctrines and virtues with them, to encourage myself.
